CASE STUDY

Eman Ahmed

Eman’s current medical condition by Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala

Eman has lost approximately half of the weight she had arrived to India with, within a period of over 2 months.
As a result of which most of her obesity related problems such as Severe Hypothyroidism, Lymphoedema, Right Sided Heart Failure (or Pulmonale), Severe Obstructive Respiratory Disease, Renal Failure and Congestive Liver problems are all much better and under control though she still needs medication for the same.

However as a result of the stroke that left her right side paralysed she still develops occasional seizures despite being on medication for the same. She is still unable to swallow liquids or speak properly.

Every attempt is being made to get a CT scan of her brain done as soon as she can fit into the Ct machine. That scan may help us better understand her neurological status, and may or may not change the further neurological management in her case.

Though further treatment for her obesity will continue she does not currently need special management for the same. For this reason and the fact that she has done so well in terms of weight loss she has now been shifted out of the room specially designed for her onto a normal hospital bed as she is now able to fit in.

The next stage in her obesity management, shall be when she may be put on a trial drug for her monogenic obesity after a period of 6* months. Every attempt is being made to procure the drug for her from the pharma company in the US.

She may or may or may not need a second stage Bariatric surgery after 2* years

For now the entire focus is on neurological rehabilitation.
Despite contrary Media reports that she will never walk again. The official stand is that every attempt is being made to enable Eman to live a normal life again. The fact is that she had not walked after the age of 11 and was crawling until her stroke 3 years back which made her completely bed bound, our team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists are making there best attempts to enable Eman to mobilise herself at the earliest. We hope to be able to see Eman walk someday though the exact time frames cannot be determined just as yet .

The hospital and team of doctors are extremely appreciative of the help that has been offered to us by the Counsel General Mr. Ahmad Khalil and H E The Ambassador Mr Hatem Tageldin in allaying the anxiety and fears  of the sister Shaimaa in these difficult times.
